Chapter 11 - Dr. Hale’s Bargain
Dr. Warren Hale accepted a plea agreement first.
He admitted altering Evelyn’s medication and falsifying the DNR. In exchange for cooperation, prosecutors agreed not to pursue the maximum murder charge.
His testimony revealed how the plan evolved.
Lucas and Helena initially wanted Evelyn declared incompetent. Hale increased sedating medication so she would appear confused during a board evaluation. Catherine’s careful monitoring disrupted the strategy.
Evelyn then prepared the new trust.
Helena panicked. The Northbridge transaction would collapse, and auditors would discover the consulting transfers. She proposed inducing a fatal cardiac event that could be blamed on Evelyn’s illness.
Hale claimed Lucas never explicitly ordered death.
He did something more convenient.
He approved the plan without asking for details.
According to Hale, Lucas said, “I do not want to know how the episode happens. I only need her unable to sign anything by morning.”
The defense called that statement ambiguous.
The prosecution called it deliberate blindness.
Hale also revealed that Lucas instructed him to prepare the false DNR weeks earlier. Catherine’s name was removed from the emergency-contact list so no hospital could ask her questions.
The scheme depended on three assumptions.
Evelyn would die quietly.
Catherine would be expelled quickly.
The family name would discourage scrutiny.
All three failed because Evelyn understood the people around her better than they understood her.
Hale lost his medical license and faced prison despite the agreement. Families of other elderly patients requested reviews of his records. Two suspicious deaths were reopened.
Catherine attended none of his sentencing hearings.
She spent those days meeting pharmacists from locations Lucas planned to close.
