The Family Turned on Catherine

Chapter 09 - The Family Turned on Catherine

The arrests did not unite the Ashford family.

They made Catherine its target.

Lucas’s mother, Victoria, accused her of manipulating Evelyn and fabricating the investigation to seize power. Cousins filed emergency petitions to remove Catherine as trustee. Newspapers received anonymous stories claiming she seduced Lucas while caring for his grandmother.

One article described her as “the bedside bride.”

Catherine’s old nursing record was searched for mistakes. A patient complaint from nine years earlier appeared online without context. Photographs of her modest childhood home were published beside estimates of the Ashford fortune.

Every attack repeated the same argument: someone born outside wealth could not act without wanting it.

Judge Price advised Catherine to move into a secure residence.

She refused to occupy the Ashford private wing. Instead, she stayed in Evelyn’s small apartment above the company’s first clinic.

The apartment contained no marble floors or staff. It held a narrow bed, an old kettle and walls covered with photographs of patients.

There Catherine found Evelyn’s original company charter.

The first sentence read:

No Ashford shall confuse inheritance with moral authority.

Catherine released the charter publicly along with a full accounting of her temporary trust powers and compensation.

Her compensation was one dollar.

She also requested that every major trust decision require an independent board vote. Her own authority would be limited from the beginning.

The family’s legal argument weakened.

Employees began defending her. Pharmacists described Evelyn visiting stores without cameras. Nurses recalled Catherine reporting medication irregularities before the death. Former executives revealed that Lucas threatened anyone who questioned the Northbridge sale.

Victoria visited Catherine privately.

She offered to end the lawsuits if Catherine supported reduced charges for Lucas.

“He is my son,” Victoria said.

“Evelyn was your mother.”

Victoria looked away.

Catherine understood then that the family had spent generations treating love as protection from consequences.

She would not continue the tradition.
