The divorce became final eighteen months after Lucas’s conviction.
Catherine signed the papers at the same dining table where he ordered her to sign before reading Evelyn’s letter.
The room had changed.
The portrait remained, but the long table no longer hosted private family councils. Ashford House was being converted into a residential training center for nurses, caregivers and medical whistleblowers.
Catherine signed her original surname first.
Catherine Monroe.
Then she paused.
For years, the Ashford name had opened doors while threatening to close around her. Keeping it would make public work easier. Rejecting it would feel like surrendering history she had helped expose.
She chose a third option.
Professionally, she became Catherine Monroe. In legal records related to the trust, she preserved the married name until every investigation ended. She refused to let either identity become a weapon.
After signing, she removed the divorce agreement from the black folder.
Beneath it was a faint circular mark left by her wedding ring during the memorial dinner.
She ran one finger over it.
The table remembered pressure without understanding its meaning.
Catherine did not need the wood to forget.
She needed the room to become useful.
