Chapter 18 - Evelyn’s Final Recording
Judge Price contacted Catherine two years after the trial.
A delayed-release file had opened automatically in Evelyn’s legal archive. The founder programmed it to remain sealed until the trust transition finished.
The file contained a video.
Evelyn appeared in her bedroom wearing a dark dress and pearls, the same clothing shown in the dining-room portrait. Her voice was weaker but her mind clear.
She addressed Catherine first.
“If you are watching this, they have likely called you ambitious, manipulative and ungrateful. Those are old words used when a woman outside the gate refuses to remain grateful for being admitted.”
Evelyn apologized for drawing Catherine into the family conflict. She admitted she initially encouraged the relationship with Lucas because she hoped marriage to someone principled would change him.
“That was unfair to both of you,” she said. “A woman is not rehabilitation for a man protected from consequences.”
Then Evelyn addressed the company.
She said institutions often turned founders into saints because portraits were easier to obey than principles. She instructed future leaders to question her decisions too.
Finally, she spoke to Lucas.
There was no anger in her voice.
“I loved you before you learned what the Ashford name could buy. I loved you while I watched it purchase your excuses. My greatest failure was confusing rescue with love.”
The recording ended with Evelyn removing her pearls and smiling tiredly.
“Now stop listening to dead people and take care of the living.”
Catherine released the video publicly without editing.
The final sentence became the stewardship trust’s informal motto.
It also freed Catherine from feeling that every decision required guessing what Evelyn would have chosen.
