Dinner Beneath the Portrait

Chapter 04 - Dinner Beneath the Portrait

The memorial dinner was scheduled seven days after Evelyn’s burial.

Lucas invited board members, family trustees, senior physicians and relatives who had not visited Evelyn in years. The dining room was arranged beneath the newly completed portrait of the founder.

At Evelyn’s place sat a black leather document folder.

On it rested the sealed envelope.

Catherine wore white because Evelyn had requested it.

“Do not let them dress you in mourning while they celebrate your removal,” the old woman had said.

Lucas wore black and entered late.

He had spent the afternoon meeting with bankers about the pharmacy sale. The transaction required the founder’s controlling trust to remain under family management. He expected the formal will to confirm him as sole voting trustee.

Before sitting, he placed the divorce agreement beside Catherine’s plate.

“Sign it before the letter is read.”

Catherine removed her wedding ring.

She placed it on the folder but left the papers untouched.

Around the table, whispers began.

Lucas mistook the gesture for surrender.

He announced that Catherine had agreed to leave the family quietly and asked everyone to respect her privacy. Several relatives looked relieved. One smiled.

Catherine said nothing.

Then the estate attorney explained Evelyn’s unusual instruction: Lucas himself had to break the seal and read the letter aloud.

He approached the table.

For a moment, he hesitated beneath his grandmother’s painted gaze.

Then he tore open the envelope.

The first paragraph thanked the people who had cared for Ashford Medical. The second revoked every prior appointment granting Lucas exclusive control.

The third named Catherine Monroe Ashford as temporary chair of the founder’s trust and authorized her to suspend any executive under investigation.

Lucas stopped reading.

Catherine asked him to continue.

His face tightened as he reached the final page.

If my death is described as peaceful or natural without an independent examination, Catherine is instructed to treat that claim as evidence of interference.

The room became still.

The letter identified suspicious medication changes, missing records and pressure from Lucas, Dr. Hale and chief financial officer Helena Cross.

It ended with one command:

Do not bury the truth with me.

Outside the dining room, heavy footsteps entered the corridor.

May you like

Catherine had already followed that command.

Two detectives and a court-appointed forensic physician were waiting beyond the doors.
