Chapter 03 - The Night Evelyn Stopped Breathing
Evelyn died at 2:16 on a Monday morning.
Catherine had left the room for twelve minutes to answer a call from the estate attorney. When she returned, the bedside lamp was off and the oxygen alarm had been silenced.
Dr. Warren Hale stood near the bed.
He said Evelyn suffered a sudden cardiac event. He had already administered emergency medication and declared further intervention useless because of her advanced heart disease.
Lucas arrived three minutes later fully dressed.
That detail stayed with Catherine.
He claimed a security alert woke him, but no alarm had sounded in the family wing. His shoes were wet from the garden path, though the entrance connecting his apartment to the house was indoors.
Catherine asked for an ambulance.
Dr. Hale refused. He produced a do-not-resuscitate form bearing Evelyn’s signature.
Catherine had never seen it.
She checked Evelyn’s pulse herself and felt nothing.
While the family gathered, Lucas took the sealed black envelope from the bedside table. Catherine stopped him before he broke the wax. Evelyn’s written instruction said it could be opened only during the formal memorial dinner with every adult beneficiary present.
Lucas called the rule theatrical.
Catherine called the estate attorney.
The envelope remained sealed.
Evelyn’s body was transferred to a private funeral home owned by an Ashford subsidiary. Dr. Hale signed the death certificate before sunrise. No autopsy was ordered.
By noon, Lucas announced that the founder had died peacefully in her sleep.
Catherine searched the bedroom.
One evening medication bottle was missing. The oxygen monitor’s internal memory had been erased. A small camera Evelyn kept hidden inside a bookshelf had also disappeared.
But one piece of evidence remained.
Catherine had photographed the medication tray every night at Evelyn’s request. In the final image, a white bottle appeared beside the water glass. Its label carried the name of a drug Evelyn’s cardiologist had discontinued six months earlier.
The bottle had been dispensed by an Ashford pharmacy.
The electronic prescription came from Dr. Hale.
Lucas found Catherine comparing the photographs.
He took her phone, deleted the album and told her grief was making her dangerous.
He did not know the photographs automatically backed up to Evelyn’s private legal archive.
