The Trial Beneath Evelyn’s Name

Chapter 12 - The Trial Beneath Evelyn’s Name

Lucas and Helena were tried together eleven months after the memorial dinner.

The prosecution presented the camera footage, medication records, trust documents and financial messages. Rosa testified about saving the memory card. Judge Price described Evelyn’s capacity and precautions.

Catherine took the stand for two days.

Lucas’s attorney accused her of isolating Evelyn from family, controlling medication and creating suspicion around normal end-of-life care.

Catherine answered every question without anger.

She acknowledged that Evelyn could be difficult, suspicious and controlling. She also explained that difficult elderly women remained entitled to consent, safety and ownership of their decisions.

The attorney displayed photographs of Catherine and Lucas during happier years.

“You loved him?”

“Yes.”

“You benefited from his wealth?”

“Yes.”

“You wanted the marriage to continue?”

“For a long time.”

“Then your testimony is shaped by resentment because he sought divorce.”

Catherine looked toward Lucas.

“My testimony is shaped by what his grandmother recorded while he believed no one important was listening.”

The camera footage played.

Jurors watched Lucas stand beside the bed as Evelyn struggled. They heard him say she should have signed.

Helena’s attorney argued she merely followed Hale’s medical instructions. The DNA beneath Evelyn’s nails and her airport escape contradicted that defense.

Lucas chose not to testify.

His silence disappointed family members who still believed he possessed an explanation capable of restoring them.

No explanation came.

The jury convicted both defendants of conspiracy, financial fraud, evidence tampering and murder.

Lucas closed his eyes.

Helena remained expressionless.

Catherine felt no celebration.

She looked instead at Rosa, whose fear had carried evidence long enough to become testimony.
