The independent examination began two days later.
Evelyn’s advanced heart disease could have caused a natural death, but the toxicology findings changed the case. Her blood contained an abnormal concentration of a medication that slowed heart function. The drug had been discontinued and should not have been in her room.
There were also signs that her oxygen support had been removed before death rather than after.
Dr. Hale insisted the medication was administered during an emergency.
Hospital records showed no corresponding order.
Catherine’s photographs established that the bottle appeared before the emergency began.
The funeral home had embalmed Evelyn unusually quickly. The director claimed Lucas authorized the process because the family wanted a public viewing. Lucas denied giving the order.
A recorded call proved otherwise.
Ortiz searched Evelyn’s bedroom again. Beneath the bed frame, investigators found the disconnected wire from the hidden bookshelf camera. Fingerprints belonged to a member of estate security.
The guard admitted Helena Cross ordered him to remove the camera after Evelyn died.
He said the device had already been taken when he entered.
Someone else reached it first.
The legal archive recovered Catherine’s automatic photo backups and a voice memo Evelyn recorded four days before her death.
In it, Evelyn said Lucas had demanded she sign the pharmacy sale. Dr. Hale warned that refusing could trigger a competency proceeding. Helena told her the board would declare her medically unfit and isolate her from Catherine.
Evelyn laughed in the recording.
“They believe age means I cannot recognize a cage because it has upholstered walls.”
The final seconds contained another sound.
A door opened.
Lucas entered and said, “Grandmother, we need to discuss what happens if you keep fighting us.”
The recording ended.
Lucas’s attorneys claimed the statement referred to legal consequences, not physical harm.
Ortiz agreed it was not enough for an arrest.
Then the laboratory identified skin cells beneath Evelyn’s fingernails.
The DNA did not belong to Lucas.
