The Sentence and the Sale That Failed

Chapter 14 - The Sentence and the Sale That Failed

Lucas received a lengthy prison sentence.

Helena received a comparable term and forfeited millions in hidden assets. Northbridge Capital denied knowledge of the murder conspiracy but paid a substantial settlement after investigators proved its executives knew the pharmacy sale relied on falsified valuations.

The sale collapsed permanently.

Ashford Medical’s share price fell. Commentators predicted Catherine’s trust reforms would destroy the company.

Instead, the independent board found that the affordable pharmacies generated value the old reports ignored. They reduced emergency-room use, improved medication access and strengthened community health partnerships.

Closing them would have produced quick cash and long-term harm.

Catherine proposed transferring the pharmacy properties into a public-benefit subsidiary that could not be sold without community approval.

The board accepted.

She also removed the Ashford family’s automatic right to executive positions. Relatives could apply for jobs, but they would compete under the same standards as everyone else.

Victoria called the decision an attack on Evelyn’s descendants.

Catherine read the founder’s charter aloud.

No Ashford shall confuse inheritance with moral authority.

The company kept its name but changed what the name could command.

At the first annual meeting after the trial, Catherine stood beneath a simple photograph of Evelyn visiting the original clinic. No painted portrait, no gold frame, no staged grandeur.

She announced that the founder’s controlling shares would move into a permanent stewardship trust held by employees, clinicians and patient representatives.

Her temporary role would end after the transition.

A reporter asked whether she felt cheated after receiving no inheritance.

Catherine smiled.

“I was trusted with a task, not rewarded with a fortune.”

That distinction was the entire point Evelyn had tried to preserve.
