Michael’s Last Case

Chapter 11 - Michael’s Last Case

The review of Michael Trent’s death lasted seven months.

Investigators recovered traffic-camera images showing a county police vehicle following him before the crash.

Maintenance records proved his brake line had been cut.

The patrol car belonged to an officer working directly under Vance.

That officer accepted immunity for testimony.

Vance ordered the sabotage after learning Michael copied the corruption files.

He expected the crash to destroy the evidence.

Michael’s offline drive survived because he had mailed it to Rebecca’s mother before leaving Washington.

Rebecca read the final report alone.

For years, she blamed herself for leaving questions unanswered.

The report gave her truth without comfort.

Michael had been killed because he believed evidence should outlive fear.

At his memorial, Rebecca placed no dramatic speech beside his photograph.

She said only:

“You made a second copy.”

Daniel understood.

Sometimes survival began with something as ordinary as refusing to trust one system with the whole truth.
