The Backup Michael Left Behind

Chapter 04 - The Backup Michael Left Behind
Rebecca searched her mother’s attic for Michael’s old case files.
She found a locked metal case beneath a stack of winter blankets.
Inside was a letter, a courthouse access card, and a black encrypted drive.
Michael’s letter was dated one week before his death.
Rebecca—
If anything happens to me, do not assume the official archive is complete. I created an offline copy of the Cedar County material. The code is the date we first worked together.
The drive contained payment records, property photographs, bodycam exports, and lists of criminal evidence marked destroyed but later sold through intermediaries.
Chief Vance appeared in several records.
So did Rourke.
The abandoned warehouse was central to the scheme.
Officers removed cash, weapons, and valuables from evidence storage, replaced them with falsified destruction forms, and moved the property through the warehouse.
Daniel had seen them.
Rourke planted items in his car to destroy his credibility before he could speak.
Rebecca copied the drive twice.
One copy went to an independent federal prosecutor.
The second entered a bank vault.
She carried the original into court inside a sealed evidence bag.

Rourke believed she had only one copy.
That mistake kept her alive.
