The Brother They Called Guilty

Chapter 02 - The Brother They Called Guilty

Six months earlier, Rebecca’s younger brother, Daniel Sloan, was arrested for armed robbery.

A convenience store clerk identified his jacket.

Officer Rourke claimed he found the stolen cash and a handgun beneath Daniel’s passenger seat.

The case looked simple.

Daniel had a prior conviction for fighting outside a bar when he was nineteen. He worked irregular construction jobs. He could not afford a private attorney.

The prosecutor offered eight years.

Daniel refused.

“I did not do it.”

Rebecca believed him because she knew where he had been.

He spent the night repairing the roof of their late mother’s house with two neighbors and a receipt from a hardware store timestamped during the robbery.

Rourke said the receipt could belong to anyone.

The neighbors were dismissed as friends trying to help.

Then Rebecca requested the bodycam footage.

The department replied that Rourke’s camera had malfunctioned.

She requested the patrol-car video.

It had been deleted during a routine server error.

She requested dispatch records.

Those records showed Rourke spent seventeen unreported minutes near an abandoned warehouse before stopping Daniel.

Rebecca had worked twelve years as an investigator for the Justice Department.

She knew seventeen missing minutes were not an accident.

They were a place to hide the truth.
