The Prosecutor Changes Sides

Chapter 09 - The Prosecutor Changes Sides

Assistant District Attorney Laura Chen had prosecuted Daniel’s case.

She believed the evidence when it arrived.

Rourke had a decorated service record. Vance personally certified the missing video as a technical failure. The robbery victim’s statement matched the planted cash.

Laura had not asked enough questions.

During the hearing, she requested permission to address the court.

She withdrew every charge against Daniel.

Then she disclosed that Chief Vance pressured her office to resist Rebecca’s evidence requests and threatened to release false information about her husband’s business if she delayed the case.

Laura turned over emails, calendar entries, and handwritten notes.

The defense expected her to protect her career.

Instead, she placed it at risk.

Daniel’s public defender asked why she changed course.

Laura looked at Rourke.

“Because loyalty to a case ends when the evidence proves the case is false.”

Judge Brooks dismissed the robbery indictment with prejudice.

Daniel was free.

The gallery applauded until the judge called for order.

Rebecca watched her brother leave the defense table.

Six months had been taken from him.

Freedom did not return those months.

But truth prevented the county from owning the rest of his life.
