Daniel did not return to construction.
Jail had changed the way enclosed rooms felt.
Loud doors made him freeze.
Uniforms made him angry before he could control it.
He entered counseling and joined a legal-support nonprofit helping families track evidence requests, court dates, and public records.
He was not an attorney.
He was useful.
Daniel knew how quickly paperwork could become a wall around someone without money. He helped families request footage before deletion deadlines and find witnesses before fear scattered them.
Rebecca visited the office on Fridays.
They ate lunch together and talked about everything except the case until Daniel was ready.
One afternoon, he asked whether she regretted kicking Rourke.
Rebecca considered it.
“I regret that he raised his fist.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“No,” she said. “I do not regret stopping him.”
Daniel smiled for the first time that day.
The video had made Rebecca famous.
Her brother preferred the quieter victories.
A charge dismissed.
A recording preserved.
A family reaching someone before a plea deadline.
