Chapter 11 - The Apology Without a Demand
Adrian apologized to Claire in the empty conference room.
No board members.
No attorneys.
The glass door remained open, and Naomi stood within sight because Claire requested it.
Adrian did not kneel, touch her, or ask for forgiveness.
“I believed evidence selected by the person who benefited from it,” he said. “I let anger make me cruel. I authorized your accounts frozen. I approved the public statement. I ignored your calls and signed away your right to reach me.”
Claire listened.
“I did not know about the twins,” he continued. “But I created the conditions that kept me from knowing.”
Her eyes filled, though her face remained controlled.
Adrian swallowed.
“I am not asking you to come back. I am asking for a chance to know Noah and Eli in whatever way you decide is safe.”
Claire looked through the glass toward the family room.
The boys were building with wooden blocks.
“You do not become their father because their faces look like yours.”
“I know.”
“You become their father by being there when nothing dramatic is happening.”
Adrian nodded.
“Then I will start there.”
Claire studied him for a long moment.

Adrian accepted it like the most important contract of his life.
