The Picture in the Lobby

Chapter 15 - The Picture in the Lobby
One year after the confrontation, the glass lobby held a public exhibition about the restored medical project.
Claire stood beside a prototype bearing the names of every original engineer. Her name appeared first, not because Adrian ordered it, but because the team voted.
Noah and Eli wore matching sweaters again.
They were older now, louder, and no longer afraid of the building.
Adrian approached from the elevators carrying two small paper bags.
“Pancakes?” Eli asked.
“Cookies,” Adrian said.
“Safer choice,” Noah replied.
Claire laughed.
The sound stopped Adrian for half a second. It reminded him of the photograph he once kept hidden in his desk, the woman by Lake Michigan before suspicion poisoned everything.
A photographer asked whether they wanted a picture.
Claire looked at Adrian.
But the twins stepped between them.
Noah held Claire’s hand.
Eli grabbed Adrian’s.
The photograph captured four people in the bright lobby, not healed, not reunited, but present.
Afterward, Eli asked whether Adrian would be in the next family picture.
Claire did not answer immediately.
Adrian knelt beside him.
“Only if your mom says it feels right.”
Eli frowned. “What if we say it feels right?”
“Then I listen to all three of you.”
Claire met Adrian’s eyes. A year earlier, he would have treated the boys’ affection as permission to move faster than she was ready for. Now he understood that love did not erase boundaries.
Later, Adrian placed a copy beside the hospital photograph with the empty chair.
He kept both.
One showed everything he lost by refusing to listen.
The other showed what became possible when he finally did.
He thought Claire vanished alone.
She had left carrying two lives he never deserved to miss.

The boys had his eyes.
But the courage that brought them back was entirely hers.
