Marcus’s Final Weapon

Chapter 13 - Marcus’s Final Weapon

Marcus had one final defense.

He claimed Claire planted the drive.

For twenty-four hours, the lie spread again.

Claire nearly left Chicago.

“I will not put the boys through this,” she told Adrian.

He understood that asking her to stay would repeat the old pattern: his company’s needs placed above her safety.

The hotel had already received two threatening calls. A photographer waited near the side entrance. Noah asked why strangers were saying his mother’s name. Eli hid the dinosaur beneath his pillow because he feared someone would take it again.

Adrian arranged protection only after Claire approved every person involved. No black cars outside the boys’ window. No armed men in hotel hallways. Just a female security specialist downstairs and private transportation when Claire requested it.

Then Adrian went public alone.

He held a press conference in the glass lobby where he first saw the twins. He did not blame unnamed advisors or hide behind legal language.

“Five years ago, I accused Claire Rowan without an independent investigation,” he said. “I approved statements that destroyed her reputation. New evidence proves she was framed by my brother, but his crime does not erase my responsibility.”

Adrian released the verified timeline, the external forensic findings, and the board’s correction. He refused to reveal anything about the twins beyond confirming Claire had suffered private harm.

Claire watched from the hotel.

For the first time, Adrian used his power to absorb damage instead of directing it toward her.

She stayed.
