The boys were named Noah and Eli Rowan.
Adrian learned their names in an executive conference room.
Claire refused to proceed until independent counsel arrived. The twins sat at the table eating crackers from Claire’s bag.
Noah held the dinosaur.
Eli watched Adrian.
“Are you our dad?” he asked.
Claire froze.
Adrian felt the question like a physical blow.
He looked at her.
She did not answer for him.
“Yes,” Adrian said.
The word came out rough.
Eli frowned. “Why didn’t you know us?”
Adrian searched for something honest enough for a child.
“I made a terrible mistake.”
Noah looked at Claire. “Is that why Mom cries when she thinks we sleep?”
