The Woman Who Disappeared

Chapter 02 - The Woman Who Disappeared

Five years earlier, Claire vanished three days before their wedding.

He said she stole confidential design files from Vale Meridian, transferred money from a research account, and fled before investigators arrived. The evidence looked perfect: her access card opened the lab, her password authorized the transfer, and security footage showed her entering the building after midnight.

Adrian believed it because his brother Marcus placed the documents in front of him.

Claire tried to call Adrian that morning. He did not answer. She sent messages saying she had been framed. His legal team advised silence. His mother called Claire a social climber who had finally revealed herself.

Then Claire disappeared.

No farewell.

No defense in court.

No explanation.

Adrian told himself she ran because guilt had found her.

Yet for five years, he kept one photograph hidden in his desk: Claire laughing beside Lake Michigan, one hand over her stomach, sunlight in her red hair.

Now two boys stood in his lobby wearing matching navy sweaters, staring at him with the same crease between their eyebrows he saw in the mirror every morning.

Claire’s voice pulled him back.

“I did not come here to introduce you.”

Adrian looked at the boys.

“Then why are you here?”

The child holding the dinosaur raised it carefully.

“Because Rex found a secret.”
