Grace’s Choice

Chapter 12 - Grace’s Choice

Adrian offered Grace her old position.

Grace knelt in front of him.

“I am not leaving you.”

“Then why not come home?”

“Because I should never again be the only person protecting you.”

Oliver looked confused.

Grace explained that she loved him, but love needed rules strong enough to survive powerful adults. Returning as a private employee would put her beneath another contract that someone could erase.

Adrian understood.

He asked his attorney to create an independent child advocacy role within Oliver’s trust. Grace read every page.

She changed several clauses.

Oliver watched.

“Does this mean Celeste cannot fire you?”

Grace smiled.

“It means no one can make me disappear without you being told the truth.”

Oliver hugged her.

Adrian looked away for a moment, overwhelmed by relief and shame.

Grace was not returning because he rescued her.

She was returning because she had secured the power to protect Oliver properly.

That difference mattered.

The next morning, the boy ate breakfast between them.

No photographers.

No orchestra.

No one demanded that he smile.
