Adrian returned with Oliver’s hand in his and Grace on the boy’s other side.
Celeste stood near the head table surrounded by guests who no longer knew whether to comfort her or move away.
Adrian stopped beneath the largest chandelier.
“The engagement is over.”
Celeste laughed once.
“You are ending our future because a child misunderstood discipline?”
“I am ending it because you isolated my son, forged my signature, dismissed his caregiver, and planned to use his trust.”
“You have no idea what I sacrificed for you.”
Adrian looked around the room she had designed.
Celeste had built a beautiful evening around a frightened child.
“You sacrificed nothing that belonged to you,” he said.
He removed the engagement ring from the chain inside his jacket and placed it on the champagne-stained table.
Celeste stared at it.
“You will regret humiliating me publicly.”
Grace spoke before Adrian could.
“You fired me publicly through every system that controlled my access. You planned to remove Oliver publicly after announcing yourself as his new family.”
Celeste turned on her.
“You are a waitress.”
Grace looked at the broken glasses.
“Tonight, yes.”
