The Table Without a Tower

Chapter 15 - The Table Without a Tower

One year later, Hart Meridian held another charity dinner.

There was no champagne tower.

Oliver had requested a table filled with sparkling apple cider, paper stars, and handwritten cards for children receiving treatment at the hospital foundation. Adrian approved the plan without asking whether it looked impressive enough.

Grace attended as Oliver’s independent advocate and honorary director of the family support program.

She wore a simple dark blue dress.

No apron.

No tray.

Near the end of dinner, Oliver took the small stage.

He held a card in both hands.

“My name is Oliver Hart,” he said. “Last year, I ran because I was scared. Grace caught me. My dad listened. Now our foundation helps kids find one safe person before they have to run.”

He looked at Grace.

Then Adrian.

After the speech, he ran across the ballroom again.

This time, nothing shattered.

Grace opened one arm.

Adrian opened the other.

Oliver reached both of them.

He looked at the empty space where the champagne tower once stood.

“My son told the truth,” he said. “The miracle was not that he found his voice.”

Adrian looked toward Oliver laughing between Grace and the hospital children.

“The miracle was that I finally stopped listening to everyone else.”
