The Lowest Table in the Room

Chapter 10 - The Lowest Table in the Room

A temporary court recognized Lily as Nathan’s probable child but postponed the final trust ruling pending DNA verification.

The Mercer family requested testing at a laboratory they had used for decades.

Ava demanded federal supervision.

Samples were collected from Lily, Nathan’s preserved medical tissue, and Julian as a secondary relative.

The first result declared no relationship.

Evelyn’s lawyers celebrated.

News channels called Lily an impostor.

The court removed her temporary heir protections and reopened the question of Ava’s guardianship.

That same day, Ava was arrested on a revived assault charge from the wedding.

Evelyn entered the courthouse through the front doors while Ava was led through a side corridor.

Lily was placed with Rose under supervision.

At dinner, the child sat at a small kitchen table in Rose’s apartment, watching commentators debate whether her mother lied.

“I know who my father is,” she said.

Rose answered, “Paper can be changed.”

“Then why do adults need paper?”

“Because memory belongs to people, and people can be frightened. Paper is supposed to stay.”

Lily looked at Nathan’s photograph.

“But it didn’t.”

Rose saw the truth.

The samples had been switched.

Miriam obtained transport logs showing the federal courier made an unexplained six-minute stop inside a parking garage owned by Mercer Security.

The courier denied leaving the vehicle.

A traffic camera captured Grant Voss’s former deputy entering the garage.

Federal agents recovered discarded packaging from a locked maintenance bin. Inside was a swab labeled with Lily’s case number and biological material from an unrelated child.

A second test was ordered using three laboratories and direct courtroom collection.

This time the result was conclusive.

Lily was Nathan Mercer’s daughter.

The false test exposed a final network of employees still loyal to Evelyn.

Ava’s assault case also collapsed when full wedding footage showed Evelyn gripping Lily’s wrist and attempting to tear away the brooch.

The prosecutor declined charges.

Ava left the courthouse to find hundreds of people waiting—not elites, but nurses, teachers, farmers, and families harmed by Mercer institutions.

They carried signs bearing Nathan’s words:
