The Wedding That Stopped Before the Signature

Chapter 02 - The Wedding That Stopped Before the Signature
Julian moved between Ava and his grandmother.
“You need to apologize.”
Ava stared at him.
“To Lily?”
“To my grandmother. Every camera in the room recorded that.”
“Then every camera also recorded her hurting a child.”
Evelyn rose with the help of two guests. A red mark darkened her cheek, but her posture remained regal.
“She stole the Mercer Star.”
Lily clutched the brooch beneath Ava’s hand.
Ava had seen it only once before. Grace wore it in a photograph taken months before her death. When Ava asked about it, Grace said it came from someone who had promised to return.
That person never did.
Evelyn summoned security.
“Hold the child until police arrive.”
Ava stepped back.
“No one touches her.”
Julian lowered his voice.
“Ava, do not make this worse.”
“You watched your grandmother grab her.”
“She was retrieving stolen property.”
Lily began to tremble.
Ava removed Julian’s wedding ring from her finger. The religious ceremony had ended, but the civil documents had not yet been signed. The marriage could still be stopped without an annulment.
She placed the ring on a champagne tray.
“The registry will remain unsigned.”
A wave of shock moved through the room.
This wedding had been negotiated like a treaty. Ava’s family foundation controlled hospitals and universities. The Mercers controlled banks, courts, and half the state legislature. The union was supposed to end twenty years of rivalry.
Julian’s face hardened.
“You would destroy everything over one misunderstanding?”
Ava looked down at Lily.
“No. I would destroy it over the way you responded when a child was afraid.”
Evelyn’s security chief, Grant Voss, approached with two officers.
Before he reached them, an elderly woman in a dark blue dress stepped from the kitchen entrance.
Rose Bennett had been Grace’s nurse during her final pregnancy and Lily’s guardian before Ava obtained custody. She had not been invited to sit with the powerful families. Ava had insisted she attend anyway.
Rose held up a sealed envelope.
“The brooch was not stolen,” she said. “Grace left instructions for it to be shown only if Ava ever married a Mercer.”
Evelyn’s expression went white.
Julian turned toward his grandmother.
“What does that mean?”
Rose looked at Lily, then at Ava.
“It means the child’s father was Nathan Mercer.”
Nathan was Julian’s older brother.

He had died in a private plane crash eight years earlier.
And under the Mercer family trust, his firstborn child—not Julian—was the legal heir.
