The Secret Inside the Star

Chapter 04 - The Secret Inside the Star

Lily refused to remove the brooch.

When Grant Voss reached for her, Ava raised her voice so every camera could hear.

“This child is Nathan Mercer’s daughter. Anyone who touches her is interfering with a legal heir and potential witness.”

The word witness stopped him.

Several judges in the ballroom began calling their clerks. Reporters streamed the confrontation live. Evelyn could influence the courts, but not erase hundreds of recordings at once.

Rose led Ava, Lily, and two independent attorneys into the bridal suite.

The brooch had a hidden mechanism beneath its center stone. Pressing two points at once released a tiny silver compartment.

Inside was a strip of microfilm and a brass number: 4417.

The microfilm contained photographs of bank ledgers, aircraft maintenance records, and a handwritten list of names.

Some names belonged to families sitting in the ballroom.

Nathan had discovered that Mercer Bank financed illegal land seizures, chemical dumping, and political campaigns through a network called the Commonwealth Circle. Judges dismissed lawsuits. newspapers buried investigations. state contractors inflated costs and returned money as donations.

The powerful families in the room had not simply attended the wedding.

They were the structure Nathan tried to expose.

Ava’s attorney, Miriam Cross, photographed every frame.

The brass number matched a private vault at Mercer Bank.

Rose possessed the second key.

Before she could explain where, the suite lights went out.

A fire alarm began ringing.

Smoke seeped beneath the hallway door.

Security announced an electrical fault and ordered evacuation through the service corridor.

Rose shook her head.

“That corridor has no cameras.”

Ava wrapped Lily in a damp tablecloth and led everyone toward the public ballroom instead.

The main doors remained locked.

Guests panicked.

Ava climbed onto the stage, seized the microphone, and shouted for the hotel manager to open the emergency exits.

Julian confronted Grant Voss.

“Unlock them.”

“My orders come from Mrs. Mercer.”

“I am a Mercer.”

“Not the one who signs my checks.”

Julian struck the emergency release with a champagne bottle. Glass shattered. The doors opened.

Fresh air entered as guests rushed out.

The smoke came from a small device planted near the bridal suite. There was no electrical fire.

Someone had wanted Ava, Lily, and the brooch moved into an unseen corridor.

Outside, police surrounded the hotel.

Evelyn told them Ava had assaulted her and attempted to steal a family artifact.

Ava was arrested in her wedding gown while Lily screamed her name.

The cameras captured that too.

The most celebrated bride in the state left her wedding in handcuffs.
