Chapter 11 - Grace’s Last Day
The payment records from Vault 4417 reopened the investigation into Grace’s death.
Her car had not simply suffered steering failure. A remote diagnostic device disabled the system while she drove along the mountain road.
The device was registered to a Mercer fleet company.
Grant Voss agreed to cooperate in exchange for avoiding a life sentence.
He admitted Evelyn ordered him to retrieve the brooch and Grace’s documents. She claimed the car would stop safely after losing power.
Voss knew that was false.
He followed Grace to the crash site.
She survived the initial impact.
Before emergency services arrived, Grace gave him a message.
“Tell Ava the star opens twice.”
Voss took the brooch but could not find the second compartment. When another vehicle approached, he left it inside Grace’s coat and fled.
Grace died before rescue.
For years, Voss carried her final words as a technical puzzle, not a moral accusation.
Now he understood the second opening was the sapphire seam containing Nathan’s recording.
Ava listened to his confession without moving.
“You could have called an ambulance.”
“I was afraid of Evelyn.”
“So was Grace.”
Voss lowered his head.
Fear explained obedience.
It did not erase choice.
Prosecutors charged Evelyn with conspiracy in both Nathan’s and Grace’s deaths.
Her defense argued Voss was inventing orders to save himself.
Then Miriam found an audio file in Mercer Bank’s old telephone archive.
Evelyn’s voice said:
Stop Grace before she reaches Ava. The child must never arrive with proof.
The recording ended years of ambiguity.
Julian heard it alone.
He had spent his life treating Evelyn’s ruthlessness as family protection. The recording revealed its true form: the willingness to kill anyone who made the family story difficult to control.
He visited her in the private medical suite where she awaited trial.
“Did you love Nathan?”
Evelyn looked offended.
“I built his future.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“He chose strangers over blood.”
“He chose people you were hurting.”
She turned toward the window.
“You will understand when everything collapses.”
