Chapter 16 - Grace’s Name Restored
For six years, Grace Hart’s official biography ended with speculation.
Some articles called her unstable. Others implied she had seduced Nathan for money. Mercer-owned publications described her car crash as the tragic end of a woman overwhelmed by secrets.
The new evidence cleared her name.
Ava organized a memorial at the county courthouse where Grace and Nathan had married.
There were no gold chairs.
The guest list included their former clients, environmental workers, courthouse clerks, and families from contaminated towns.
The surviving marriage clerk brought the original register, preserved in a basement after the flood. Nathan and Grace’s signatures appeared on the page exactly where Rose remembered them.
Lily traced her parents’ names with one finger.
“Were they happy?”
Rose answered.
“Sometimes. They were also scared, stubborn, tired, and terrible at choosing safe places to meet.”
Lily smiled.
The truth made her parents human again.
Ava spoke at the memorial.
“My sister was not important because she married a Mercer. Nathan was not brave because he was born one. They mattered because they chose to act when belonging would have been easier.”
The courthouse unveiled a legal-aid fund in their names.
Julian attended from the back row.
No one invited him to speak.
He remained.
Afterward, Lily placed the sapphire brooch inside a small display case with a replica replacing the hidden evidence. The original stone went into the public archive.
A plaque explained the brooch’s journey without calling it priceless.
Its market value was insignificant compared with the money it helped expose.
Its real value came from the people who refused to surrender it.
Ava asked Lily whether she wanted to use the Mercer surname.
The child thought for several days.
She chose Lily Grace Hart-Mercer.
