The Ballroom Reopens

Chapter 17 - The Ballroom Reopens
The Grand Aurelia closed for six months after the wedding scandal.
When it reopened, the hotel invited Ava to host a restitution dinner in the same ballroom.
She nearly refused.
Lily wanted to go.
This time, the tables had no hierarchy. Families affected by Mercer policies sat beside trustees, employees, and public officials. No raised platform separated the most important guests.
The chair where Evelyn fell remained in storage.
Ava wore a simple dark-blue dress.
Lily wore the repaired flower-girl shoes. The hollow heel remained visible beneath a glass patch as a reminder of where she hid the sapphire.
During dinner, a server accidentally spilled water near Ava.
The young woman froze, expecting anger.
Ava helped move the plates.
The moment was small.
That was why it mattered.
At the center of the room stood an empty table with eight chairs representing people who died before the truth emerged, including Nathan and Grace.
Rose placed white flowers there.
Julian attended as a clinic representative, not a family heir.
When he and Ava met near the windows, neither pretended the room did not contain their unfinished life.
“You look different without the dress,” he said.
“So do you without the dynasty.”
They both smiled.
There was tenderness.
There was no return.
Lily took the microphone near the end of the evening.
“Last time I was here, everyone knew who had the most important chair,” she said. “Tonight, people keep sitting in the wrong places.”
Laughter moved through the room.
“I think that is better.”
She invited the kitchen staff to eat before dessert service ended.
At first, managers hesitated.
Then guests stood and carried plates toward the service doors.
The ballroom changed not through a speech but through movement.
People who had always entered last came through the main doors.

The chandeliers looked the same.
The room beneath them did not.
