Julian pleaded guilty to obstruction and false statements in Nathan’s estate case.

His cooperation and age at the time reduced the sentence to probation, community service, and a permanent ban from elected office for ten years.

His political allies vanished.

Friends stopped inviting him to private clubs.

The apartment provided by the Mercer trust was sold for restitution, and Julian moved into a small rental near the courthouse.

Ava visited once.

He made coffee himself and burned it.

“You would have hated this on our honeymoon,” he said.

“We were never married.”

“I know.”

He looked at the unsigned registry document framed by no one and stored in evidence.

“Did you ever love me?”

“Yes.”

“Do you still?”

Ava considered the question carefully.

“Some part of me loves the man you might have been if fear had not chosen for you.”

“That sounds like no.”

“It is not a yes that can build a life.”

Julian accepted it.

He began working at a legal clinic representing families harmed by predatory banking. Many clients refused him. Some demanded another lawyer. He stayed.

One afternoon, Lily entered with Rose.

Julian stood awkwardly.

“I do not want this.”

Julian closed her hand around it.
