Chapter 07 - The Night Lily Disappeared
Julian reached St. Catherine’s shortly after midnight.
The director claimed Lily had been transferred to another facility for her safety.
No court order authorized the move.
Security footage showed a black sedan leaving through the rear gate.
Grant Voss drove.
Ava called the police. Judge Samuel Vale refused to issue an emergency search warrant, claiming the transfer might be administrative.
Miriam contacted a federal child-protection unit.
Evelyn held a press conference.
She described Lily’s disappearance as a tragic consequence of Ava’s recklessness and offered a million-dollar reward for information.
The woman who ordered the transfer now appeared to be leading the search.
Julian knew Voss favored Mercer properties without public records. Nathan once took him to an abandoned summer camp owned through a church trust near Lake Gideon.
They drove there before sunrise.
Inside the lodge, they found Lily’s flower-girl shoe near the fireplace.
The heel had been cut open.
The sapphire was gone.
Ava’s knees nearly failed.
Then Rose noticed six small stones arranged beneath the window in the shape of an arrow.
Lily had left a trail.
Outside, more stones led toward the boathouse. Beneath a loose floorboard was a note written in crayon:
THE LADY WITH THE RED RING TOOK THE BLUE STONE. MR. VOSS SAID BANK AT 9.
The lady with the red ring was Evelyn.
She had visited the lodge personally.
At nine, Mercer Bank opened for a private board session.
Ava, Julian, Rose, Miriam, and federal agents arrived with an emergency warrant signed by a judge outside the Commonwealth Circle.
The succession vault was already open.
Evelyn stood inside holding the sapphire and the copper key.
Grant Voss restrained Lily beside the door.
Ava moved toward her.
Voss tightened his grip.
Evelyn said, “One more step and he takes the child downstairs.”
Lily looked at Ava but did not cry.
She had learned something in captivity: fear was useful to adults only when it controlled the next movement.
She stamped hard on Voss’s foot and ducked.
Julian tackled him.
Agents entered.
Evelyn dropped the sapphire.
It struck the marble and split along a hidden seam.
A tiny memory wafer slid across the floor.
Lily reached it first.

“My mother said this belongs to the truth.”
