The Engagement at Whitmore House

Chapter 01 - The Engagement at Whitmore House

Lauren had arrived at the estate that morning for an engagement luncheon.

The Whitmore mansion stood outside Greenwich, Connecticut, surrounded by clipped hedges, old trees, and a lawn wide enough to hide difficult conversations.

Julian’s parents had invited forty guests.

The wedding was six weeks away.

Lauren expected flowers, speeches, and another afternoon of Margaret correcting small details about the ceremony.

Instead, Julian asked her to meet him upstairs before lunch.

He waited in the balcony sitting room with a folder and two glasses of champagne.

“Sign these before everyone arrives,” he said.

Lauren opened the folder.

The first page named Julian temporary co-trustee of the Vale Medical Foundation.

The second gave him authority to approve loans using the foundation’s property as collateral.

The third allowed the Whitmore family office to manage Lauren’s personal inheritance if a physician declared her unable to make decisions.

Lauren looked at him.

“Why would I sign this?”

Julian smiled.

“Because marriage means we stop operating like strangers.”

Her late mother had created the foundation after building a network of rehabilitation clinics. The trust funded free treatment for children and veterans. It could not be sold for private investment.

Julian knew that.

His father also knew it.

Lauren closed the folder.

“No.”

The smile left Julian’s face.
