People expected revenge.
She had another plan.
The property was converted into a rehabilitation residence for women recovering from serious injuries and financial abuse.
Guest rooms became accessible apartments.
The ballroom became a therapy hall.
Charles’s study became a legal-aid office.
The balcony was removed.
Engineers said it could have remained after reinforcement.
Lauren still asked them to take it down.
Not because she feared the structure.
Because she did not want survivors arriving at the house to look upward and wonder whether pain had become architecture.
The black river stones were moved into a courtyard garden.
A plaque beside them carried no names.
It read:
You do not need perfect memory to deserve belief.
