The Parents’ Story

Chapter 06 - The Parents’ Story
Charles and Margaret repeated the same story separately.
Lauren became emotional.
She complained of dizziness.
Julian tried to steady her.
She pulled away and fell.
The wording matched too perfectly.
Officer Elena Ruiz arrived while Tessa prepared Lauren for transport. Ruiz separated the parents and asked what each had seen.
Charles said Lauren climbed onto the railing.
Margaret said she never reached it.
Charles said Julian was inside the room.
Margaret said he held Lauren’s arm.
Their story began breaking within minutes.
Then a housekeeper approached the officer.
Her name was Rosa Mendoza. She had worked at the mansion for eleven years.
“I heard them upstairs,” she said.
Charles turned sharply.
“You heard nothing.”
Rosa looked at Lauren on the stretcher.
“I heard Mr. Julian say she would sign one way or another.”
Margaret ordered Rosa to leave the property.
Officer Ruiz stepped between them.
“No one is leaving.”
The engagement guests had begun gathering near the driveway. Phones appeared. Charles demanded privacy.

Ruiz looked at the woman being carried toward the ambulance.
“Privacy ended when someone fell from your balcony.”
