The Family That Needed Her Trust

Chapter 02 - The Family That Needed Her Trust
The Whitmores looked wealthy because they had spent generations learning how wealth should look.
The mansion was real.
Most of the money was not.
Charles Whitmore’s development company had borrowed against nearly every property it controlled. Two luxury projects had stalled. A bank deadline arrived the week after the wedding.
The Vale Medical Foundation owned debt-free clinics worth more than four hundred million dollars.
Julian’s plan was simple.
Once he became co-trustee, the family office would borrow against the clinics, transfer the loan into Whitmore Development, and call it a temporary investment.
If the projects recovered, no one would know.
If they failed, the clinics would carry the loss.
Lauren discovered the plan after a foundation accountant sent her an unusual draft agreement.
She confronted Julian three days before the luncheon.
He called it a misunderstanding.
She told him the wedding might be postponed.
That was when Charles proposed another solution.
Lauren had fainted twice during the previous month after drinking tea at the mansion. Margaret told guests the stress of wedding planning was affecting her judgment.
A family physician prepared notes describing anxiety, confusion, and episodes of paranoia.
The notes were false.
But with Lauren’s signature on the new documents and another public collapse, Julian could request emergency control of the trust.

The balcony was not where the plan began.
It was where Lauren finally refused to cooperate.
