Left Beside the Highway

Chapter 01 - Left Beside the Highway

Walter Hayes stepped out of the black sedan with one hand on the door and the other gripping his old brown suitcase.

The sun hung low over the Arizona desert, turning the highway copper and gold. Ethan Hayes stood beside the open rear door in his wedding tuxedo.

Inside the sedan, Madison sat in a satin bridal dress, watching through the window with impatient eyes.

Walter looked from the empty road to his grandson.

“This is not the terminal.”

Ethan placed the suitcase on the shoulder.

“We need your signature before we go any farther.”

Walter’s face tightened.

“I already said no.”

Madison leaned across the seat.

“You are seventy-nine. The company cannot wait for you to become reasonable.”

Walter stared at her.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“Sign, or walk.”

Walter looked at the road stretching in both directions.

“You would leave me here?”

Ethan glanced toward Madison.

She gave the smallest nod.

He shut the rear door.

Walter reached for the handle, but the sedan rolled forward.

“Ethan!”

May you like

The car accelerated.

Walter stood in the sunset, one hand extended, while the people who wanted his company watched him shrink in the side mirror.
