Ethan Tries to Become a Grandson Again

Chapter 11 - Ethan Tries to Become a Grandson Again

Ethan approached Walter after Madison was moved toward a patrol vehicle for questioning.

The sunset had faded to purple.

Truck headlights illuminated the road.

“Grandpa.”

Walter looked at him.

The word sounded different now.

Ethan removed his tuxedo jacket and held it over one arm. “Madison planned the sale,” Ethan said.

“You signed it.”

“She said the board would never choose me while you were alive.”

Walter’s face remained still.

“So you tried to erase me without waiting.”

Ethan began to cry.

“I did not think you would be alone for long.”

“You called police to find a confused old man.”

“I thought they would bring you somewhere safe.”

“You needed them to create evidence.”

Ethan could not deny it.

Walter looked toward the black sedan.

“You watched me in the mirror.”

That sentence broke whatever defense remained.

Ethan covered his face.

“I raised you,” Walter said, “but I cannot protect you from what you chose.”

Ethan whispered, “Will you ever forgive me?”

Walter looked at the drivers standing nearby.

“Forgiveness is not a job title. It will not return your keys.”
