The Side Mirror

Chapter 07 - The Side Mirror

Ethan saw the trucks in the mirror.

At first, he assumed they were ordinary freight traffic.

Then the three black tractors slowed and spread across the lanes behind him.

Madison twisted in her seat.

“Why are they stopping?”

Ethan recognized the silver wing emblem on the grilles.

Hayes Continental.

His mouth went dry.

The trucks did not chase the sedan. They remained around Walter, hazard lights pulsing. But their arrival changed everything.

Drivers would call dispatch.

Dispatch would call the board.

The vehicle cameras would be reviewed.

Madison looked at Ethan.

“Turn around and say he misunderstood.”

Ethan shook his head.

“You told me not to.”

“I am telling you now.”

He slowed.

In the side mirror, he saw Walter standing beside Maria Torres.

Ethan pulled onto the shoulder.

Madison grabbed his arm.

“Do not go back without the signed papers.”

“The cameras saw us.”

“Then say he asked to get out.”

“He called my name.”

“Cameras do not prove intent.”

Ethan looked at the red emergency light beneath the dashboard.

He had forgotten the cabin recorder.

Madison followed his gaze.

For the first time since the wedding, her confidence disappeared.
