Three Trucks in the Sunset

Chapter 06 - Three Trucks in the Sunset
Walter heard the engines before he saw the trucks.
Three black semi-trucks appeared on the horizon, headlights burning through the sunset as they slowed near the mile marker.
Walter stood.
His knees trembled.
The lead truck stopped several yards ahead while the others positioned behind it with hazard lights flashing.
Maria Torres climbed from the lead cab.
Two other drivers followed: Jamal Price and Ben Carter.
Maria reached Walter first.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Who left you?”
Walter looked toward the distant sedan.
“My grandson.”
Maria’s face hardened.
Twenty-eight years earlier, Walter had driven through a snowstorm to bring Maria home after her husband died on a delivery route. He paid her wages through the funeral, helped her earn a commercial license, and never treated charity as debt. She had spent her career waiting for a chance to return even a fraction of that loyalty.
Now she looked at the old man standing beside June’s suitcase and understood what the convoy had been called to carry.
Not freight.
Him.
Jamal lifted Walter’s suitcase.
Ben radioed dispatch and requested highway patrol, medical assistance, and preservation of every vehicle camera in the area.
The convoy’s dashcams faced west.
They had recorded the black sedan slowing, the rear door opening, Walter being left, and the car driving away.

Ethan had wanted an official record of confusion.
The road had created a record of abandonment instead.
