The Highway Patrol

Chapter 08 - The Highway Patrol

Two highway patrol vehicles arrived within minutes.

Sergeant Lena Brooks approached Walter first while a medic checked his blood pressure. Another officer walked toward Ethan’s sedan.

Ethan and Madison returned. Madison stepped out holding the document folder.

“This is a family medical emergency,” she said. “Mr. Hayes is disoriented.”

Sergeant Brooks looked at Walter.

He stood beside Maria, alert and steady, answering every question with dates, names, and exact mile markers.

“What day is it?” Brooks asked.

Walter answered.

“Who is the governor?”

Walter answered, then added, “That has nothing to do with whether my grandson abandoned me.”

Maria covered a smile.

Madison presented the competency form.

Brooks examined it.

Walter pointed toward the signature.

“That doctor has never met me.”

Ethan tried to interrupt.

Brooks raised one hand.

Madison stopped speaking.

Brooks asked Walter what happened.

He explained the documents, the demand, and the threat to leave him.

Then Maria provided her dashcam footage.

Ethan watched himself on a small patrol screen: removing the suitcase, shutting the door, driving away while Walter reached after the car.

No confusion appeared in the recording.

Only choice.
