Walter retired the following spring.
Drivers parked three hundred trucks in long rows, leaving the center lane open. Maria Torres stood beside Walter on a small platform.
The board announced a new ownership structure.
Employees received a protected voting trust.
Pension properties could no longer be sold without worker approval.
No family successor could control the company without five years of operating experience and an independent ethics review.
Walter appointed Rebecca as interim chief executive.
Maria joined the board as the first elected driver representative.
Maria handed him the keys to a restored blue truck matching the first one he and June owned.
“Last route?” she asked.
Walter smiled.
“Not last.”
