Walter had believed there would be a retirement dinner.
Ethan called him that morning and said the drivers were gathering at the western terminal. He promised speeches, photographs, and one final ride in the company’s ceremonial black sedan.
Madison joined them in the wedding dress from a courthouse ceremony held two hours earlier.
Walter understood the complication when she produced the documents.
The first transferred Walter’s voting shares to Ethan.
The second gave Madison authority over the Hayes Family Trust.
The third declared that Walter had voluntarily stepped away because of cognitive decline.
Walter read every page.
He had spent fifty-three years reading freight contracts, union agreements, and bank covenants. Walter closed the folder.
“No.”
Ethan’s face changed.
Madison said they should continue driving until Walter understood what was at stake.
Instead, Ethan stopped in the desert.
