Chapter 12 - The Suitcase Opens
At the terminal, Walter opened June’s suitcase in front of the board.
He had refused a hospital visit after a medic cleared him, but Maria insisted on driving. Ethan and Madison remained with investigators while attorneys preserved the sedan and its records.
Walter placed June’s ledger on the table.
Beside it, he placed the trust agreement.
The original document proved Ethan’s shares were conditional. They carried no permanent ownership until Walter retired voluntarily and an independent committee certified the transition.
Rebecca compared the documents.
“Forgery?”
“At minimum, alteration,” company counsel said.
Walter opened the ledger to the first page.
June had written one sentence beneath the company name.
No load matters more than the person carrying it.
Walter read it aloud.
The board members sat quietly.
Walter closed the ledger.
“I planned to retire this year.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“Do you still?”
“Yes.”
The room reacted.
Walter raised one hand.
“I will not remain because someone tried to steal the chair. But I will decide how I leave, and who is ready to protect what comes after.”
He asked every board member to name one driver, mechanic, or dispatcher whose family depended on a decision made in that room. Two directors could not answer. Walter requested their resignations.
A company could survive bad weather, fuel shortages, and broken engines. It could not survive leaders who saw employees only as numbers beneath a quarterly line.
