The documents in Madison’s folder revealed more than a forced retirement.
The proposed sale transferred Hayes Continental’s real estate and fleet leases to Red Mesa Holdings, a company formed four months earlier.
Madison’s father owned Red Mesa through two trusts.
The purchase price was far below market value. Red Mesa planned to close union terminals and sell pension-backed properties.
Ethan would become chief executive.
Madison would receive a transaction fee.
Walter looked at his grandson.
“Did you read the terminal closures?”
Ethan glanced at Madison.
She answered for him.
“Those locations are inefficient.”
“One employs four hundred people.”
“Businesses are not charities.”
Walter’s expression changed.
“No. But they are promises.”
The scheme was no longer an argument about inheritance.
It threatened thousands of families.
Sergeant Brooks collected the folder after Madison’s attorney advised her not to surrender it. The patrol officer explained that documents connected to a possible fraud and false emergency report could be preserved as evidence.
