CHAPTER 1: The Door Left Open

Ethan Caldwell came home expecting peace.

The Caldwell estate stood behind black iron gates in Westchester, wrapped in winter darkness and the clean silence of old money. After three weeks of emergency meetings in Chicago, Ethan had imagined the moment a hundred times on the flight back: he would step inside quietly, leave his suitcase by the staircase, kiss his sleeping wife, and watch his newborn son breathe under the soft blue light of the nursery lamp.

He did not call ahead. He wanted to surprise Clara.

The front hall smelled faintly of polished wood and lilies. Every chandelier glowed low. The mansion looked perfect from the outside, the way it always had, but something inside it felt wrong.

The house was too quiet.

Then Ethan heard the cry.

It came from upstairs, sharp and broken, not the hungry cry Noah made when he needed a bottle, not the tired cry that faded when Clara held him. This cry tore through the hallway with panic in it.

Ethan dropped his suitcase.

He took the stairs two at a time. At the top, the nursery door was open by six inches. Pale blue light spilled across the floorboards.

Noah cried again.

Ethan reached for the handle, but before his fingers touched it, he heard another voice.

A woman’s voice.

Cold. Controlled. Familiar.

“You will sign it tonight,” Margaret Caldwell said. “Or I will make sure everyone believes you are unfit.”

May you like

Ethan froze.

Then he pushed the door open.
