CHAPTER 4: Papers Under the Crib

Ethan handed Noah carefully to Clara.
Clara held the baby against her chest like she was afraid the room itself might reach for him. Ethan watched her for a moment, making sure she could stand. Then he turned back to the floor.
The room had been disturbed in more ways than fear could explain.
Near the changing table, several pages were scattered across the rug. Ethan bent and picked them up.
The top page carried the embossed name of a law office his family had used for years.
HARDWICK, BELL & SLOANE.
Below that, a line was highlighted in yellow.
TEMPORARY TRANSFER OF INFANT CARE AUTHORITY.
Ethan’s throat tightened.
He read the first paragraph. Then the second. The language was formal, clean, almost gentle. But the meaning was brutal. The document would allow Margaret Caldwell to assume temporary guardianship responsibilities over Noah on the claim that Clara was emotionally unstable and unable to provide proper care.
His name was not on the approval line.
Clara’s was.
Ethan looked up.
“What is this?”
Margaret folded her arms. “A precaution.”
“A custody document.”
“A family protection document.”
Clara’s voice broke. “She said if I didn’t sign, she would call a doctor and say I was dangerous. She said nobody would believe me because I had no family here.”
Ethan felt a coldness spread through him.
Clara had lost both parents before she turned twenty-five. Margaret had always known that. She had smiled at Clara during the wedding and called her “brave” for standing alone at the altar.
Now Ethan understood what his mother had really seen that day.
Not courage.
Vulnerability.
He looked at the paper again.
A blank signature line waited under Clara’s name.
May you like
Margaret had not lost control tonight.
She had planned this.
