CHAPTER 13: The House After Midnight

After the police left, the mansion did not feel like home.
It felt like a crime scene wearing expensive furniture.
Ethan carried the broken rattle downstairs and placed it on the kitchen counter because he could not bear to leave it in the nursery. Mrs. Nolan made tea nobody drank. Clara sat at the kitchen table with Noah in a wrap against her chest, one hand resting constantly on his back.
Every small sound made her flinch.
The ice maker.
A branch against the window.
The distant closing of a door by one of the night staff.
Ethan noticed each reaction with a pain that had nowhere to go.
“I want to leave tonight,” Clara said.
He nodded immediately.
“Anywhere you want.”
She looked surprised, as if she had expected to negotiate for the right to feel unsafe.
“My aunt has a house in Maine,” she said. “It’s small. Nothing like this. But it’s quiet.”
“Then we go to Maine.”
Ethan called his driver, then stopped himself.
No.
The Caldwell household had too many people Margaret could reach. He booked a car himself under Clara’s maiden name and packed three bags without asking staff to help.
In the nursery, he took only what mattered: Noah’s blankets, formula, diapers, Clara’s nursing pillow, the framed ultrasound photo, and the baby monitor containing the truth.
Clara stood at the doorway watching him.
“I thought you would ask me to stay,” she said.
Ethan looked around the blue room.
“I spent too many years staying in rooms where she hurt people.”
May you like
He closed the suitcase.
“I’m done.”
