CHAPTER 16: The Lawyer Who Drafted the Paper
By noon, Ethan’s own attorney, Rachel Kim, was on a video call from Manhattan.
Rachel had been Ethan’s corporate counsel for years, but her voice changed when he told her the document involved Noah. Business was one thing. A child was another.
“Send me everything,” she said. “The custody paper, the monitor footage, photographs, police report number, names of officers, housekeeper statement.”
Ethan forwarded the files from June’s kitchen table.
Rachel read in silence.
Then her expression hardened.
“Hardwick, Bell & Sloane drafted this?”
“Yes.”
“They had no authorization from either parent?”
“None.”
Rachel exhaled sharply.
“Then someone at that firm has a serious problem.”
Clara sat beside Ethan, wrapped in one of June’s sweaters. Noah slept in a portable bassinet near the window.
“What can Margaret do?” Clara asked.
Rachel softened her voice.
“She can try to file claims. She can use influence. She can make noise. But she cannot invent parental authority where none exists. The footage matters. Your statement matters. The pattern matters.”
Clara nodded, but fear remained in her face.
Ethan saw it.
Rachel saw it too.
“I also want you to speak with a trauma counselor,” Rachel said. “Not because you need to prove anything. Because what happened to you was real.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
For weeks, Margaret had used the word unstable like a weapon. Rachel used care like a shield.
Ethan looked at the custody paper again.
At the bottom, under the law firm’s name, was the signature of Adrian Bell, a partner Margaret had known for twenty years.
Ethan circled it with a pen.
