CHAPTER 8: The Call to the Police

Ethan did not ask his mother to leave.

He called the police.

Margaret stared at him as if he had spoken in a foreign language.

“You cannot be serious.”

Ethan put the phone to his ear and gave the dispatcher the address. His voice was calm, too calm, the kind of calm that comes only after something inside a person breaks cleanly in half.

“My wife was assaulted inside our home,” he said. “There is video evidence. My infant son is present but physically unharmed. We need officers here.”

Margaret stepped toward him. “Hang up.”

Ethan moved between her and Clara again.

“Do not take another step.”

For the first time, Margaret obeyed.

Mrs. Nolan led Clara to the rocking chair and brought a blanket from the hallway closet. Clara sat with Noah against her chest, rocking without realizing it. Her lips moved silently over and over.

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

Ethan knelt in front of her.

“You don’t apologize,” he said quietly.

Clara looked at him. “I should have called you.”

“I should have seen it sooner.”

Margaret laughed bitterly from across the room.

“How touching. You two are going to destroy this family over one difficult evening.”

Ethan stood slowly.

“One difficult evening?”

Clara’s eyes lifted.

Mrs. Nolan’s face changed.

Ethan saw it. There was more.

He turned to the housekeeper.

“What else?”

Mrs. Nolan hesitated.

Margaret said, “Careful.”

That single word decided it.

Mrs. Nolan straightened.

“It wasn’t just tonight, Mr. Caldwell.”

The mansion seemed to grow colder.

Clara looked down.

May you like

Ethan’s hand closed around the baby monitor until his knuckles whitened.

“Tell me everything.”
