CHAPTER 7: The Camera Above the Crib

The video began with Clara standing beside the crib.
She looked exhausted, but gentle. Her hair was loose, her face pale from sleepless nights, but her hand rested softly against the crib mattress as she whispered to Noah.
“It’s okay, baby. Momma’s here.”
Then the nursery door opened.
Margaret entered carrying a folder.
On the monitor screen, the room looked small and fragile. Ethan watched his mother step into the blue light like a shadow crossing something innocent.
“You ignored my calls,” Margaret said on the recording.
Clara turned, startled. “It’s late.”
“You will sign tonight.”
“No.”
Margaret placed the papers on the dresser. “You do not get to say no when my grandson’s future is at stake.”
Clara’s voice shook, but it held. “He is not yours to take.”
Then Margaret moved.
She grabbed Clara by the hair and yanked her backward from the crib. Clara gasped and dropped to her knees. Noah’s cry sharpened instantly.
Ethan stood frozen as the recording continued.
Margaret leaned close to Clara’s face.
“I built this family before you were born,” she said. “You are a mistake my son made in grief and loneliness.”
Clara sobbed, “Please, he’s scared.”
“Good,” Margaret said. “Maybe he should learn early what happens when his mother refuses to obey.”
Ethan stopped the video.
The nursery went silent except for the soft broken breathing of his wife.
Margaret’s face had lost color.
“That was taken out of context,” she whispered.
Ethan looked at her as if he had never seen her before.
“Out of context?”
He held up the monitor.
“You dragged my wife across our son’s room while he screamed.”
Margaret swallowed.
“She forced my hand.”
Clara closed her eyes.
May you like
And Ethan finally understood: there would be no apology.
Only survival.
