CHAPTER 11: Clara’s Statement

Clara gave her statement in the upstairs sitting room.
She sat on the sofa with a blanket around her shoulders while Noah slept in the bassinet beside her. Ethan sat close, but he did not speak for her. That was important. Too many people had spoken over Clara already.
Officer Ramirez asked careful questions.
When did the conflict begin?
Had Margaret ever touched her before tonight?
Had anyone threatened to take the baby?
Clara answered slowly.
The first threat had come six days after Ethan left. Margaret had arrived with flowers and a private nurse, saying Clara “looked unsuitable” to handle the demands of motherhood alone. Clara refused the nurse. Margaret smiled and told her refusal would be remembered.
The second threat came after Clara missed a family foundation luncheon because Noah had a fever. Margaret told her powerful families recorded patterns of neglect.
The third came with the lawyer.
“He said the document was temporary,” Clara said. “He said signing it would prove I was reasonable. But the way she looked at me… I knew if I signed, I would not get Noah back without begging.”
Officer Ramirez wrote this down.
Ethan listened in silence.
Every sentence struck him differently because he could place it against his own blindness. Clara had sounded tired on the phone. She had paused before answering simple questions. He had thought she was overwhelmed by new motherhood. He had told her he would be home soon.
Soon had not been enough.
Officer Ramirez looked at him next.
“Mr. Caldwell, did you authorize any legal arrangement regarding your child’s care?”
“No.”
“Did you give your mother authority to act on your behalf?”
“Never.”
Clara looked down at her hands.
May you like
Ethan reached for them.
This time, she let him hold them.
